About the school

The Government High School of Kotri Labour Square was established in a worn-down building and with deplorable facilities. Even still, the pursuit of education and a better life drove the students and teachers to make do with what they had.

However, in 2010 the school building was ravaged by the devastating floods that affected large swaths of Pakistan. Once the water receded, the building served as a shelter for the displaced locals that lost their homes in the natural disaster. All of this left the school heavily damaged, with blown out windows and doors, no functioning washrooms, or water on the premises. Classroom conditions were becoming hard to bear for the students and teachers alike.

School Statistics

The school serves 370 students, with 17 teachers. Despite the hardships of their school, Kotri Labour Square high school students continue to rank amongst the much better funded schools, with a pass rate of 100% for grades 9 and 10 over the last five years. This demonstration of remarkable focus and firm dedication to a higher educational standard surely deserves to be supported and encouraged.

One may assume that since the school in question is a government school, it would receive sufficient and reasonable support from Pakistan's education ministry. However, the reality is that Pakistan's government schools are shamefully underfunded, where lackluster education budget and accountability often leave the school staff to fend for themselves. The headmaster of the Kotri Labour Square high school had submitted numerous appeals to the higher educational authorities to no avail.

Our Impact

The school staff started with repairing what they could, but could not afford the technical labourers or the building materials out of their own meager salaries. Through the contributions provided by SAF's compassionate donors, the following school repairs and additions were completed under our supervision:

Brought main water supply line from nearby location, approx. 1500 ft away.
Large main water storage tank constructed, dims 10 ft x14 ft x 6 ft.
Small water storage tank constructed on the roof to supply water to the washrooms.
Fiber water filter system installed for drinking water.
Repair of five washrooms and their wash basins.
Window covering of three classrooms and office.

We would like to pass on the thanks to our extraordinary donor community, that upon hearing the problems that faced the school, provided immediate and spectacular support for the project! It's also important to remember that the benefits extend further than an improved learning environment. Once a school is equipped with the proper amenities, children & youth are more capable of attending, learning, and continuing their education. Properly educated youth stand a much better chance against poverty and are able to break its viscous cycle. The children and teachers of Kotri Labour Square high school are extremely grateful for you, and other donors supporting them.

Our short appeal

Could any of us spend 8 hours a day learning at school without the need to satisfy our thirst or relieve ourselves? There are numerous government schools that have been abandoned by the federal education department, leaving the responsibility of operating and maintenance in the hands of the local community. More often than not, these schools cannot afford to stay open without support. Your contributions make the difference for countless students!
